Forgotten Mountain Roads

Routes that were built for a reason that no longer applies, but that still cross country worth seeing.

Why forgotten roads exist

Mountain roads were built for specific historical reasons. Trade routes, military access, mining infrastructure, hydroelectric projects. When those reasons change, the road sometimes remains, often in a reduced state.

These roads are sometimes among the most interesting drives available, precisely because they are no longer maintained for through traffic.

Examples to seek out

Italy's Strada delle 52 Gallerie in the Veneto pre-Alps was built during the First World War. It is now a walking route, but the access roads to it traverse spectacular terrain.

The Karakoram Highway from Pakistan into China still functions but the older Friendship Highway sections remain in places, in much rougher condition.

Bolivia's Yungas Road, the so-called Death Road, was bypassed by a newer route. It is now mostly used by cyclists, but cars can still drive it.

Norway's Trollstigen and Atlantic Road are both still used but feel like forgotten engineering, with the modern roads taking the traffic on parallel routes.

Forgotten Mountain Roads — landscape

Driving forgotten roads safely

Confirm the road is open. Some routes are closed seasonally or permanently. Check with local authorities.

Drive in daylight only. Surfaces are unpredictable.

Carry recovery gear. A tow strap, a shovel, a tyre repair kit.

Tell someone your route and expected return.

What you'll see

Engineering that current standards would not produce. Stone parapets carved by hand. Switchbacks that switchback again. Tunnels cut for traffic that no longer passes.

Sometimes a small chapel or memorial built to honour the workers who built the road. Worth a stop.
